Laser Etching for DNA Sequencing

Aerospace’s method of accurately mass-producing flow cells has helped to significantly reduce the cost of DNA sequencing—from millions of dollars to around $4,000—making sequencing an individual patient’s DNA affordable.

The process invented at Aerospace allows for the creation of much more sophisticated, true three-dimensional shapes within the glass because the focused laser beam can be moved to expose (i.e., write) any pattern shape, including embedded structures. The only requirement is that the embedded structure be connected to the surface of the flow cell to provide a pathway for the chemical etchant.
